A Mover’s Guide to Lubbock Neighborhoods and West Texas Towns: What to Know Before You Move

If you’re moving to the Lubbock area, one of the first questions isn’t just when — it’s where. Lubbock itself offers everything from apartments to family homes, and the smaller communities ringing the city each have their own feel. As movers who work across the whole region, we see all of it, and the same advice applies everywhere: the right neighborhood is the one that fits your daily life, and the right move plan is the one built around that neighborhood’s realities.

Moving within Lubbock

Most of our moves stay inside Lubbock, and no two look alike. A downtown or near-campus apartment move might mean stairs, tight parking, and a reserved elevator window. A family home on the other side of Loop 289 might mean a longer driveway, a garage full of gear, and a yard to deal with. Before moving day, walk through the practical details of both addresses: where can the truck park, are there stairs or elevators, and is there anything oversized — a piano, a gun safe, a pool table — that needs special handling?

If you’re new to town, spend a little time driving the routes you’ll actually use: the way to work, the grocery store, the school or daycare. A neighborhood that looks great on a map can feel very different at rush hour, and a quick test drive tells you more than any listing ever will.

Just outside the city: the smaller communities around Lubbock

Some of the most popular moves we handle are to the smaller communities just outside Lubbock — places like Wolfforth, Shallowater, Slaton, Idalou, New Deal, Ransom Canyon, and Smyer. Families often head to these towns for more space, a quieter street, or a bigger yard, while still staying close enough to Lubbock for work and errands.

Moving to a smaller community comes with its own planning notes. Driveways and roads can be narrower, and rural properties sometimes have longer carries from the truck to the door. If your new place has a long driveway, a gate, or limited turnaround space, mention it when you request your estimate so the crew arrives with the right plan. And if you’re moving out of one of these towns and into Lubbock, the same advice applies in reverse — let the movers know what the access looks like at both ends.

Farther out in West Texas

Tough Guys Moving also serves communities farther across West Texas, including Levelland, Plainview, Brownfield, Littlefield, Lamesa, and Amarillo. A move to one of these towns is a bigger day than a cross-town move, and distance matters: our long-distance pricing is based primarily on the labor required to pack, load, and unload plus the mileage between pickup and delivery. That means an accurate estimate starts with honest details — where you’re going, what you’re moving, and when.

If you’re relocating to a farther-out town, build in extra time for the things people forget: forwarding mail, transferring utilities, and a final walkthrough of the old place. The farther the move, the more it pays to have one point of contact and one crew handling the whole job from start to finish.

What to check before you choose a neighborhood

Wherever you’re headed, run through this short checklist before moving day:

  • Truck access. Can a moving truck park near the door? Is there a gate code, a low tree branch, or a steep driveway the crew should know about?
  • Building rules. Apartments and retirement communities often have move-in hours, elevator reservations, or floor-protection requirements. Ask before moving day, not during it.
  • Stairs and heavy items. Count the flights and flag the heavy pieces. Pianos, gun safes, and oversized furniture take extra crew and equipment, and planning for them ahead of time keeps the day on schedule.
  • Storage gaps. If there’s a gap between move-out and move-in, ask about storage unit moves — we can move belongings into storage and out again when the new place is ready.
  • Packing help. If the calendar is tight, professional packing takes the biggest job off your plate entirely.
